released in June 2016, from then on
.Net core has been receiving new versions and feature additions from
time-to-time. I this post we shall see some of the Major version released in
.Net Core and a brief overview of features released in each version of .Net
core.
.Net core 1.0 was released in June 2016, this was the first version of .Net core released by Microsoft. The initial versions of .Net core support only C# and F# programming languages, though later versions of .Net Core (.Net Core 3.0) supports Visual Basic.Net.
Along with .Net core 1.0, Asp.Net core 1.0 And Entity Framework Core 1.0 were also released. The objective of releasing .Net Core is to rebuild the foundation of .NET to be target cross-platform, highly distributed cloud applications, micro services and containers (Dockers).
.Net Core 2.0 was released in August 2017 and was supported by Visual Studio 2017, Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio for Mac. Along with .Net Core 2.0, Asp.Net 2.0 and Entity Framework 2.0 were also released. .Net Core 2.0 runtime comes with major performance improvements, it implements .NET Standard 2.0
.Net Core 3.0 was announced in May 2018. A public preview was released on December 4, 2018. An official release is planned for 2019, .Net core 3.0 adds support for building Windows desktop applications using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Forms, and Entity Framework 6 (EF6). ASP.NET Core 3 enables client-side development with Razor Components. EF Core 3 will have support for Azure Cosmos DB. It will also include support for C# 8 and .NET Standard 2.1
