LINQ to SQL
LINQ to SQL is a mapping between the Object and the
Relational Schema, using this we can manipulate the relational data using its
mapped objects.
LINQ to SQL is another step forward in Microsoft’s approach
in bringing the relational model closer to the developers, using this model;
the developer can operate on the relational data without any knowledge on the syntax
of the underlying relational data model.
Under the hood LINQ to SQL does the mapping between the Object world and the Relational world, when the developer executes a query against the Object model, it is converted to the corresponding Relational query and is executed in the relational database, similarly when there is a response from the Relational database, it is converted back into the Object model and presented to the developer.
The developers can use the Object Relational Designer (O/R Designer), to create the Object representation of the tables in the Relational database, the developers can then use this object mode to query the relational database. For more details on the O/R Designer refer to the post Object Relational Designer (O/R Designer)

The developer can use the common LINQ syntax to work on
multiple underlying Relational databases; the Entity Data model isolates the
relational model from the developer and presents the data in an object model.
