SharePoint 2010 Sites

Portal in SharePoint 2007 is now Sites in SharePoint 2010. The following are the new features added to Communities in SharePoint 2010

Feature	Description
Ribbon	Top Menu and Tools are added to the new Ribbon, which is freeze to the top and does not scroll with the content.
Dialogs	Popup windows are now replaced with Ajax based Dialogs
Silverlight	Silverlight is supported, Allows adding Silverlight web parts directly.
Health Analyzer	Helps monitor server status and fix issues quickly
Browser Compatibility	Supports Internet Explorer 7.0 & 8.0, Safari and Firefox
Visual Upgrade	Allows you to retain the SharePoint 2007 look-and-feel if you want, displays a preview of SharePoint 2010 look-and-feel before committing to the new UI
Multilingual User Interface	Now apart from the content the Menu items, List headers, Ribbon text etc also support multiple languages.

Business Process Management in SharePoint 2007 is now called Composites in SharePoint 2010. The following are the new features added to Composites in SharePoint 2010

Feature	Description
Access & Visio Services	Allows users to publish Access and Vision files in SharePoint, which can be viewed by other users in the Browser itself.
Business Connectivity Services (BCS)	Business Connectivity Services (BCS) replaces Business Data Connector (BDC) which was available in MOSS 2007. Unlike BDC which can only read data from external sources, BCS can read and update data with external sources.
BCS - List Integration	Lists can be created by referring to tables in external data sources, the lists will be auto populated based on the data from the external tables.
BCS - Bulk Operation Support	Unlike BDC which supports only single operations at a time, BCS supports bulk data operations.
BCS – Support Blobs	BCS can also read BLOD data from external sources.
Silverlight	Silverlight applications can now be uploaded to Document Libraries.

Search Refinement panel	Search results are provided with Refinement panels which provide category based groups to drill down further on the search results. Eg: Group By - Author, File Type, Date History
Improved Scalability	Based on FAST Search technology, improved performance and scalability when compared to previous versions.
Search Suggestions	While the user types a keyword, Autocomplete suggestions like Google will be displayed.
People search	Enable searching people by name, job, skills etc
Ranking & Relevance	Search results provide ranking based on popularity and relevance details based on Metadata information.
Search External Data	Search can fetch data from external sources using Business Connectivity Services (BCS).
