SharePoint Portals

Portals allow creating sites for individual users, groups and at organizational levels.

My Site
Individual user sites provide options for the end users create and publish their own information. For example an individual site can contain information about their profile, ideas etc.

Group Sites
To publish information specific to user groups.

For example a particular team can have a site, which publishes details specific to the project which they wish to share with other users.

Group portals can be created at department levels like HR Portal, IT Department Portal, these portals can publish information specific to their departments

Organizational Sites
To publish information about the organizations as a whole which is applicable to all the users, sites can also be published as external sites in the internet which is visible to all the users in the internet.

Portal Features

Feature	Description
Web Parts	Web Parts are re-usable units which can be shared across sites. Example: Announcements Web Part, Event List Web Part, Contact List Web Part. Web Parts can be customized by setting appropriate properties. Example: Color, Font etc.
Navigation	Navigation Tabs can be added to sites / pages which ease, navigation across different sections / sites.
Master Pages	Master pages can be designed to provide a consistent look and feel across all pages of a site.
Single Sign-on	Using a common set of authentication credentials across different sites, prevents the users from logging in separately for each portal.
Team Site	A pre-defined site template which helps in managing team activities can be used to enable collaboration in a team/project/department or any specific group. Helps in making the team more efficient and more productive and ultimately achieve better business results.
My Site	Allows every user to have his own site, where he can store his documents, contacts etc. Users can also post their profile in their site, so that it is easily accessible to others in the organization.
