Bitbucket was developed and managed by Altassian. Altassian provides a GUI based editor for Bitbucket called SourceTree.
GitHub also supports GUI based editors like GitHub Windows, SmartGit etc
GitHub was launched before Bitbucket and a has a bigger community.
